| Why "Sidhe Designs"? "Sidhe", pronounced "SHEE", is the name of an ancient fey race described in Celtic mythology. The Sidhe were a race of "gods but not gods" who inhabited Ireland millennia ago, but who were driven underground into "fairy mounds" and cairns by their Milesian conquerors. Lore describes the Sidhe as better than humans -- tall, slender, and luminous with shining intellects and unfading beauty -- but not quite of the same race as the gods. Sometimes they are called the "Tuatha de Dannan" (children of Danu) , "the Good People", or the "Lordly Ones." They are NOT the diminutive flower fairies popular in Western Culture, but rather a race of strange and stately creatures said to have retreated to a fey dimension that is connected to but not quite a part of ours. When we make faerie costumes, we make them for Sidhe. This beautiful, magical, and elusive race -- in both its benevolent and wicked manifestations -- is a powerful inspiration to us. |
